WHY IS ART IMPORTANT AT HIGHLAND ELEMENTARY?
The aim of the Highland Elementary art program is to provide a positive art experience for all students in grades K-5 through the use of a wide variety of media such as; drawing, painting, printmaking, sculpture, clay, and crafts. Students learn to express themselves in creative and individual ways. The visual arts program incorporates reading, writing, math, history and technology as well as integrating with what students are learning in other classrooms. Art is not just fun to do it is very important, because it develops self esteem, an appreciation of others, self expression, cooperation, and builds thinking and problem solving skills. Art provides a different way to  visually communicate with one another. Creating art physically helps in the development of fine and gross motor skills along with hand-eye coordination. Projects are also designed to stimulate imagination and creativity. Students learn about themselves and their environment through careful  observation. They learn to "see" like an artist!

WHAT IS ART CLASS LIKE AT HIGHLAND?

All Highland Elementary  students have 45 minutes of art instruction every week. Class time may include:

        Art Learning Time:

  • where we learn about various artists, their art and unique cultures that produce art. We do this through books, observation, discussion and visual educational presentations using technology.

        Art Making Time:

  • where student artists get to apply what they have learned to a piece of their own own art work.

      Art Reflection Time:

  • which is time where student artists get to critique and appreciate what they and others have created. Students always learn from seeing how someone else completed the same task.

Class Crayon Awards
Students work together to achieve class crayon awards each week in art.  This can be done by following all class and school REACH rules. Students are encouraged to always have a positive attitude and act like Hawks! After a class recieves ten paper crayons they get a day in art where they each can choose what they would like to create. This allows students the perfect opportunity to work on special projects, try new things and learn individually. Many students enjoy looking through the many "How to draw" books that are provided or they enjoy creating collaborative artwork with one another.  It's just FUN to be CREATIVE!!!
